Fuse Boards Changes

Fuseboards Explained

The fuseboard is also known as consumer unit or distribution board. You should make sure you know where it is in case you ever need to turn the electricity off in an emergency or on if a circuit protective devise activates.

If you live in a old house or one that hasn’t been electrically updated in a long time you may have a BS:3036 rewireable fuse board.

These old fuseboards can be dangerous when operating under fault conditions as the fuse element sometimes splashes as it melts causing hot copper to spray around nearby objects, obviously hot copper falling on certain materials can cause fire.

Our team of Electricians can upgrade your existing fuseboard to a fully compliant 18th edition board and issue all the current certificates which mean you have the peace of mind that your home is now electrically safe and sound.

Advantages of upgrading your fuseboard:

  • If a circuit breaker did ever trip you have the ease of just flicking the switch back to its on position.
  • No more trips to the local hardware store to buy fuse wire.
  • Gives indirect and direct protection for shock (MCBs & RCBOs/fuses don’t)
  • Gives excellent protection against fires
  • Even gives some protection when earth path is lost
  • Switches off in milliseconds, not seconds
  • The entirety of your electrical installation will be protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD).  These are switches that trip a circuit under dangerous conditions (i.e Earth Leakage), and instantly disconnect the electricity.

If your fusebox has a wooden back, contains cast iron switches, or a mixture of fuses it is likely that it dates back to before the 1960s and will need to be replaced.
